Discover Deepwood
We are so much more than a historic house museum! While you are visiting Deepwood take a museum home tour and learn about early Salem history, enjoy a picnic, walk the nature trails, take pleasure in the beautiful flowers and native plants, explore the formal gardens designed by Lord & Schryver, see the exotic plants in our greenhouse, take family photos, or set up an easel and be inspired. Throughout the year Deepwood hosts a variety of popular community events and programs. There is something for everyone at Deepwood!
While you are visiting Deepwood make sure to save time to tour the many other fascinating cultural attractions in Salem. Click here to Explore Salem.
We love to see families on the property enjoying the beauty of Deepwood. As we are a historic property, we don’t allow blankets and tables to be set up in the formal gardens, so if you would like to enjoy a picnic, please utilize the four large picnic tables adjacent to the parking lot!
Park Hours
The gardens and nature trails are open daily from Sunrise to Sunset. Periodically the property is closed for a private event, so be sure to check the event calendar before planning your visit to note any special garden closures.
ADA Access
In order to maintain our historic structures and gardens in their original forms, some of our spaces are not wheelchair accessible. These areas include: the interior of the historic house and Carriage house. There are approximately 9 steps to get from ground level to the front porch, and a full set of stairs on the interior of the home to get to the second floor.
All of the historic garden spaces are accessible via long winding paths. Please call us for information on how to get the most out of your visit.
Service Animals
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), service animals are defined as dogs, miniature horses, or other animals that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Service animals are allowed inside all buildings and gardens of Deepwood where the public is normally allowed to go. These service animals must be harnessed, leashed or tethered, unless these devices interfere with the service animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective controls.
Deepwood may request service animals leave if:
- The service animal is out of control and the handler does not take effective action to control it or,
- The animal is not housebroken (historic structures).
When there is a legitimate reason to ask that a service animal be removed, staff must offer the person with the disability the opportunity to obtain goods or services without the animal’s presence.
Rules for Photographers
We love seeing fantastic photos of Deepwood. Please share your photos with us through our social media sites.
- Access to the grounds is free during park hours if just taking photographs of people (no props—i.e. furnishings, stages, large items as this disrupts the usual flow of traffic). Please remember confetti, glitter, and flower petals are not allowed on the property. There is a rental fee for photo shoots in the Solarium or on the first floor of the historic home, or if you would like to bring furnishings, signage, and other props onto the property. Contact our Event Coordinator for more information on renting the Solarium, home, or gardens for a private photography shoot.
- Please check our Event Calendar to see any potential conflicts for the day – Deepwood events, private rentals, scheduled maintenance or closures.
- Please remember we are a public park. Be aware of your surroundings and courteous to other visitors. Blocking doors, entryways or other site features for extended periods of time is not acceptable. Please do not move objects (bird baths, sun dials, benches, etc) for your photos. Disruption of visitors’ experience can result in your removal from the site.
- Please value Deepwood as a historic site. Respect garden beds, trees, and structures. Please refrain from standing, sitting, or leaning on railings or other structures of the home or Carriage House.
Flash photography is not allowed inside the historic house.
As a City of Salem property, Commercial Photographers may be required to have a permit to take photos on the grounds. For more information contact City of Salem Public Works Department.
