Preserve the Gardens

David Lichter of the Lord & Schryver Conservancy works in the gardensThe gardens and grounds of Deepwood are maintained by an army of volunteers, and dedicated staff. While Deepwood is a city park, the property is maintained through the dedication of three main groups: the Friends of Deepwood, the Lord & Schryver Conservancy, and the City of Salem.

The Friends of Deepwood helps coordinate preservation projects, encourage visitation, and interpret the grounds for the public benefit. If you’re interested in volunteering to garden at Deepwood, visit this link.

The Lord & Schryver Conservancy is a community based non-profit organization with the mission to preserve and interpret the legacy of Lord and Schryver to promote a greater understanding of their contribution to Northwest landscape architecture. Historic preservation of the gardens by the Lord & Schryver Conservancy in collaboration with the City of Salem Parks Operations Division commenced in 2003. After much research and study, the rehabilitation was carried out over the course of ten years and now is in the maintenance phase. A crew of volunteer gardeners help the city maintain these more complex landscapes within the historic gardens. For more information on the Conservancy and their projects click here.

The City of Salem owns the Deepwood Property and is included as part of the City of Salem Parks Operation Division. City employees work closely with volunteers to maintain the park for the public benefit.
